TEACHING MARTIAL ARTS
IN FAIRBANKS, AK
FOR NEARLY 50 YEARS!

2019 Kubota Cup Championship Tournament

Information Here

International Karate Association & College of the Martial Arts first opened its doors to the greater Fairbanks area in 1972 as Scott's Dojo and has continued to grow since that time.

As in the beginning, classes are still taught by 8th Dan Hanshi Charles Scott. Hanshi Scott has over 50 years of continuous training and teaching in the martial arts and, holds numerous high ranking belts in a variety of martial art styles which allows him to teach multiple disciplines at his school.

The College of Martial Arts is dedicated to providing martial arts instruction, specifically authentic Japanese Karate, Aikido, Kung Fu, Iaido Jujitsu and more. Take a look at our Classes page for more information. There are also other classes offered, but not on a continuous bases such as Hojutsu otherwise known as "the art of gunnery".

Unlike most schools, or dojo's, The College of the Martial Arts gives students the opportunity to train in more than one discipline. Many of the styles compliment each other such as karate and aikido or jujitsu. Learning both a hard and soft style can be useful for many occupations such as law enforcement, corrections, and more. It is also great for body awareness, movement, and self-defense.

Hanshi Scott’s talent and dedication to ALL martial arts earned him recognition and entrance in to the US Martial Arts Hall of Fame in 2007.

Improve Your

I lived in Fairbanks from 2009-2012 while I attended UAF. I had the incredible luck to take a Kung Fu class from Hanshi Charles Scott on UAF campus in 2011/2012. I also took a few drop-in classes at the dojo afterward, but stopped when I moved to Seattle.

I wanted to thank Charles for teaching me. His experience in teaching all ages and all levels really showed through, since I had never taken a martial art before. I was also going through a difficult time, and not only did the class help boost my confidence that I was a capable person, Charles in particular was able to "teach through" my mental state, which would have otherwise been an obstacle to learning.

I also had an exchange with him which was probably much more memorable to me than him. He picked out that I was Latina without any hints from me. I was shocked because I don't "look" like what many Americans think of as Latina. It made me feel seen, for the first time.

I got through my difficult time, and my husband and I now have a whip-smart five year old daughter who loves princesses and super heroes.

I wish Charles, and his school, the very best.

Why Join?

People join karate and marital arts for different reasons. Adults may wish to learn better coordination or physical and mental conditioning. Parents may have a desire for their child to learn, discipline or respect.  These are only a few of the qualities that will be developed should you chose to practice. Some people are inwardly shy, being forced to lead a section of class to a small group of peers slowly breaks down that wall. Soon shy quiet people find a voice and can become leaders.  Whatever your reasoning is, dedication and consistent practice will improve your mental abilities as well as your physical fitness.
