50 -Year Celebration
Whether you know it as, Mr. Scott's Dojo, The College of the Martial Arts, or the International Karate Association & College of the Martial Arts, August 25, 2022 will mark 50 years that Hanshi Scott has been teaching out of his Dojo in Fairbanks, Alaska.
To celebrate, a gathering will take place on Saturday, August 27, 2022 so please mark your calendar and join us to recognize not just Mr. Scott's Dojo, but all of Hanshi's black belts as well. We are a unique association that have always worked hard for rank and that is something to be proud of.
Please see below for additional information.
Save the Date: Saturday, August 27, 2022
Ester Community Park
Rain or shine -- we are good to go!
What to Bring
Because it is an outdoor event, there are certain things we are asking you to bring. Not everything will pertain to this so we are asking locals to bring extras.
Small folding table if you prefer one to eat off of.
Outdoor games such as:
Soccer Ball (we have the entire field)
Please label anything you bring with your name to include dishes.
Information on the potluck will be added as we get closer to the date.
As seen above, we will be meeting at the Ester Community Park just outside of Fairbanks.
We will have the stage and pavilions just in case it rains and if local attendees have one, maybe a few canopies as well.
There is a playground for the kids and a huge field for games such as cornhole toss, kicking a soccer ball around, or other games attendees would like to bring.
This will be a casual event. It is meant to reunite, celebrate, and recognize all the effort it took to become a 50-year institution. Come have some fun!
A registry of those who have earned black belts through IKA Alaska is in the works and will be presented during the planned celebration.
If you know of someone who was awarded a black belt from Hanshi Charles Scott, please pass this information on to them and have them contact, firstname.lastname@example.org so they can be included.
A gift to recognize black belts is a part of this celebration and is why it would mean a lot to have as many black belts join in on the celebration.
It is partly because of those who stayed on the path to black belt that others coming in behind them could learn by watching. Black belts have been integral to IKA Alaska over the years.

Hotel: Many hotels close to the Dojo and Ester Community Park have rates above $200 per night or are filled up during the weekend of the celebration; however, the Fairbanks Princess Riverside Lodge currently has openings and offers the following rates for a standard room:
Thursday 8/25 ($119) - Friday 8/26 ($139) - Saturday 8/27 ($119) - Sunday 8/28 ($159)
I have requested a group rate and am waiting to hear back on that. If you are planning on staying in a hotel, you may want to reserve the room before the hotel fills up. If we get a discount, you can cancel the reservation and then reserve a room using the group rate.
Room Sharing: If you would like to share a two bed room and split the cost, please email email@example.com
If a hotel is out of the question (perfectly understandable considering today's high prices), please contact firstname.lastname@example.org to ask about anyone local having a spare room. We recognize the cost of flying to Fairbanks, AK is considerable at this time and we don't want you to not attend because of mounted costs.
Car Rental: Like everything else, car rental prices are up. Here are a few sites that offer better pricing:
Alaska Airlines - https://www.alaskaair.com/car-rental/?clientId=300682#/searchcars
You can also share a vehicle and split the cost.
Flights: Although fees are up, there are still some good prices to be found to include on Alaska Airlines. Due to rising costs, it would be best to make reservations now rather than wait (be sure to check out available deals)
If you haven't already done so, please let us know if you are planning to attend and how many people will be in your party.
Letting us know if you are coming helps with food and supply needs.
Members and Invited Guests ONLY
Please let us know if you are planning to attend.
